Digital Maturity Assessment for Salzburg Airport
Lufthansa Consulting recently supported Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart with a comprehensive Digital Maturity Assessment, applying its newly developed analysis tool to evaluate an airport’s digital readiness in terms of the customer journey and overall operations. The innovative tool is based on the latest industry standards and best practices from international aviation organizations and leading airports in Europe, Asia, and North America.
Salzburg Airport is one of the first airports worldwide to use Lufthansa Consulting’s new digital tool. The airport’s goal was to objectively assess its current digital maturity, identify potential compared to international benchmarks, and derive effective recommendations for action based on this.
Bernhard Wodl, CCO of Salzburg Airport states: “The analysis provided us with a valuable, structured external perspective and enabled us to draw relevant insights – this is extremely valuable for our strategic future considerations. Above all, we obtained interesting comparative data with other airports of our size, which also allows us to understand where our competitors currently stand”.
The Lufthansa Consulting experts conducted interviews across multiple departments, examined the operational process landscape, and assessed the existing digital infrastructure in detail. The outcome: a management report with over 50 concrete recommendations, including 13 high-priority actions to enhance efficiency, passenger experience, and operational resilience.
The proposed measures focus, among other things, on the expansion of digital self-service terminals (faster, contactless passenger handling), the introduction of real-time monitoring of passenger flow to better control waiting times, and the expansion of central, digitally supported personnel planning in order to be able to use resources more flexibly and efficiently in the future.
Wolfgang Bublitz, Lufthansa Consulting’s Partner responsible for digital client projects emphasizes: “Medium-sized airports like Salzburg benefit greatly from precisely measuring their digital maturity, identifying potential, and taking concrete steps toward improvement. Our work in Salzburg demonstrates how targeted analysis can lay the foundation for a sustainable transformation strategy”.
