Cooperation: Lufthansa Consulting and the University of St.Gallen’s Center for Aviation and Space Competence

Lufthansa Consulting’s Solution Group Strategy & Organization and the Center for Aviation and Space Competence (CFAC) at the University of St.Gallen have been working closely together since 2023. This cooperation now has been officially signed with a cooperation agreement by Dr. Andreas Wittmer, Managing Director of the CFAC.

The partnership between Lufthansa Consulting and the CFAC aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience between the aviation industry and academia as well as to encourage research in the aviation industry with a focus on airline strategies and business models. In addition, the joint participation in academic and industrial events is planned, as well as the education and training of executives, consultants and students.

As part of this cooperation, our Head of Solution Group Strategy & Organization, Vincent Huette, Senior Consultant Florian Erbach and Consultant Marc Gebler have developed a whitepaper on airline business models which they will present at the 27th Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) World Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 30, 2024 – July 4, 2024.

The whitepaper is focusing on the increasing trend of airline business model hybridization as the result of the phenomenon of convergence between full-service carriers (FSC) and low-cost carriers (LCC). Until today, the identification and definition of airline business models have been almost limited to this predominant typology and only some others, such as leisure or regional carriers, are described. It becomes necessary to take a broader view in the description of business models by exiting the current spectrum limited by the two established extremes: FSC and LCC. The aim of this whitepaper is to create a comprehensive airline business model framework which broadens the current typology and allows to identify and characterize emerging business models for passenger airlines that are observable in the market today, based on a global airline sample.

The cooperation partners are a perfect match: The CAFC at the University of St.Gallen is a research institution focusing on the analysis and development of strategies for companies in the aviation and space industry. Lufthansa Consulting is a leading aviation and management consulting company, which is dedicated to assist international clients from the aviation sector and related industries to successfully meet the challenges of the future.

Associate Partner and Head of Solution Group Strategy & Organization, Vincent Hütte says: „All of us at Lufthansa Consulting look very much forward to the future of the collaboration and are excited about the joint thrilling projects that will emerge from working together for the benefit of stakeholders in our beloved aviation industry.”
